Pigeons in a Stairwell
Pigeons are able to land and roost in many areas. This may include attics, roofs, gutters, porches, warehouse and stairwells. Not only are pigeons pests, they are able to cause damage to their location. The uric acid that is in their droppings are not only unsightly on buildings, it is able to cause costly damage. Their droppings can erode concrete, paint, and other items around their nests.
The best way to stop pigeons is to stop them from having the ability of entering spaces to begin with. You are able to do this to make sure all attic openings, vents, and so on are properly screened to keep the pigeons out.
If you find that pigeons have landed in a warehouse, you will have larger openings that you need to close. If you have large warehouse doors, you are able to install a heavy duty door curtain that allows humans to easily move in and out, but prevents pigeons from flying in. If the pigeons have made their way in, you will need to discourage them from landing. You are able to so by creating surfaces that slope on the surfaces that are flat. This can include ledges and light fixtures.
You may want to consider a method of birth control to lower their population. This method has been recommended by animal welfare groups as safe and humane. If you choose not to use this method you are able to place plastic spike strips around your warehouse or stairwell ledges to deter them from landing. There are also sticky chemicals that make it incredibly uncomfortable for the birds to land and perch.
Another humane method is to use ultrasonic devices. These devices work incredibly well in warehouse ceilings and lofts. You may need to be careful with this method as there are some people that are able to hear the sounds that these devices emit.
The most commonly dealt with bird problem in the US is that of pigeons roosting on buildings. Feral pigeons tend to live in urban areas, and they prefer to roost on and in buildings, where they leave nesting material, feathers, parasites, and
worst of all, their unsanitary and corrosive droppings. The only way to
permanently solve such problems is to install bird exclusion materials, such as bird spikes or netting. Bird trapping is also an option, but it's usually a poor and temporary
fix. In addition to pigeons, other birds can cause problems in certain other situations: woodpeckers damaging houses, sparrows stuck inside retail spaces, Chimney Swifts nesting inside chimneys, etc.
