Customer Raccoon Email: Hello David, this may sound odd to you, I live in Apple Valley, California (92307), this is the "High Desert" and we are 2700' over sea level... Well yesterday @ 11:35 exact, i was outside in my front yard and a Huge Raccoon went by me, about 4 to 5 feet away, the truck was in between us, it saw me i saw it, it kept walking and went around me maybe 10' away... I did not made a move, just keep watching and thinking on my next move... the raccoon just kept on going and walked away to the neighbor's house front yard. What can i expect, i have 2 small children that play outside, sometimes until dark.. I called animal control and they told me that if we see it, we should spray it with the hose... like i'm that fast! Anyway, i would appreciate any pointers or help, i think is very unusual to see them here in the desert, but then again the desert is always full of surprises... Thanks in advance, Arturo. PS I've seen these animals many times before, in the San Francisco area and by the San Gabriel mountains, never seen one quite this big, probably about 60 or more inches long and tall, very tall.

My Answer: Raccoons nationwide seem to have lost a fear of humans, but they do not aggressively attack.

The raccoon (Procyon lotor), is a common urban animal, and native to North America. Raccoons are easy to recognize, with a black mask and ringed tail, as seen in the above photo. Raccoons tend to weigh between 10-20 pounds as adults, and live an average of 5 years. They are mostly nocturnal, and are omnivores, and will often eat pet food or garbage. They have become very acclimated to living in cities and urban areas. They are very strong, excellent climbers, very intelligent, and they are very skilled with their hands, which causes them to commonly break into homes and attics, where they cause considerable damage, and they also destroy other property, and thus raccoons are considered pest animals by many people, which is why I remove them.
