Historically, there have been a lot of services that were offered by local and regional government that are no longer available, and in the majority of areas the animal services departments will have been cut back significantly over recent decades. This means that in many cases they may not be able to offer as many services as they might have done historically, and dealing with pest animals is a service that most regional services will no longer offer. This will mean that you will need to consider whether or not you can deal with the opossum issue yourself or if you need to bring in an expert to solve the issue.

Is There A Public Health Issue?

There is generally only a small number of situations in which the city or county animal services departments will be able to help with an opossum problem, and generally this is when the issue will affect public health on a broader level. This can include situations such as where the opossums are active around schools or centers for disabled people, or when the opossums are causing significant damage to public property. If there isn't a public health issue, then the reality is that the city or county animal services departments will advise you that there isn't much that they can do to help.

What The Animal Services Can Help With

One of the areas in which the animal services departments may be able to help is in terms of giving you contacts of professionals who may be able to help, while they may also be able to point you in the right direction for resources about trapping and removing opossums. They should be able to give you some guidance on whether or not you can relocate an opossum in your area, and where relocation is prohibited some animal services departments will offer assistance in terms of euthanasia and disposing of the animal's carcass.

Should You Try To Deal With The Problem Yourself Or Hire A Professional?

This will largely depend on how much time you have available and whether or not you can afford to pay a professional to trap and remove the opossums for you. These animals are not particularly clever or elusive when a trap is placed and used correctly, but it is certainly time consuming and can also lead to health risks if you don't wear the right protective clothing, breathing masks and goggles.
