You’d probably be surprised to learn that you actually have a number of options open to you when you are experiencing a rabbit problem on your land. This is a common problem across North America, and when these small infestations start to grow and get out of hand, we would always suggest that you seek professional advice. It is likely that the rabbits will need to be trapped if that's the case, and, sadly, these creatures are often then destroyed. There are many legalities surrounding the release of certain wild animal species back into the wild after they have been captured by home and land owners, and you will need to have a chat with your local authorities to see if you are taking the right course of action. You could be prosecuted if you take an unlawful course of action.

The best way to stop rabbits from becoming a problem on your property is to modify is slightly so that the land is no longer attracting these creatures. You can’t really repel them, as such, although wildlife eviction fluid can sometimes have some effect. What you can do is remove all the things that the rabbits are coming to your land for. When there’s nothing there attracting them, they’ll have no reason to come in and take a closer look. It won’t be long before the problem finds another place to eat through.

Fencing is a good place to start, and it only needs to be about three or feet above the ground, as well as a couple of feet below the ground, in order to be effective. Mesh wiring can be used both above and below the ground when you don’t want to use traditional wooden fence panels, which can look unsightly and also block out light. You can also use the idea of fencing to protect certain patches of plants or vegetation. If you have a hard hit vegetable patch or garden bed, for example, a simple framework made out of chicken mesh wire will create a physical barrier that stops them from getting too close. You can also wrap mesh wiring around trees to protect them also. Essentially, what you’re trying to do is make the place as boring as possible — no possible food source, and no potential source of shelter either. If you see what appears to be sign of animal activity below the surface of the soil, you should investigate immediately. Rabbit burrows can easily wreak havoc on structures built on top of them. It doesn't take too much to make the entire space of land collapse on itself.

You should make sure that you’re on top of things as far as garden or land maintenance is concerned too. If you have food just lying there, ready for the taking, the rabbits will take it. That's what nuisance wildlife does. If you have food out there and a rabbit hasn’t taken it yet, it will only be a matter of time. And, if it’s not a rabbit, it’ll just be another wild critter instead, such as a rat or a mouse, perhaps?

If you have noticed what appears to be a lot of rabbit damage on your land or property, seek a professional opinion immediately. At the very least, give the local authorities a call so that you can be sure you’re not breaking the law when you try to get rid.
