Wildlife management has been around in various forms as long as people have been around (often in various forms themselves). People have no choice but to interact with their environment, and animals are the same. Sometimes.... they interact TOGETHER. When this interaction causes problems, that's when it's time to manage that wildlife. People, with the advantage of inhabiting a society in which they can rely upon the intellectual capacity of a certain small percentage of their own kind, can rule the roost here on planet earth. Now that people rule, it's time to make sure that wildlife doesn't cause us any inconvenience! Thus, there are folks out there who specialize in solving conflicts between wildlife and precious, precious, humans. People who enter this field are specially trained in wildlife management, and know how to solve problems with wildlife. Common problems involve the entry of wild animals into buildings, both commercial and residential. Other problems include damage of property, such as when birds leave their droppings everywhere, or when a mole destroys a lawn. Urban sprawl has invariably caused conflicts between people and wildlife. As people continue to spread throughout our remaining wild spaces, animals have nowhere else to turn. In many cases worldwide, certain species become threatened or even face extinction. Others learn to adapt, and it is these animals that typically cause problems for people. The most common nuisance animals are seen to the left - they include raccoons, squirrels, bats, rats, and more. These animals have learned to use people's homes and attics as living quarters, and often benefit from people by eating the food that people provide. Many animals thrive in conjunction with people - they are often referred to as commensal, and are often considered pests. Rats pose a classic example of this type of behavior - they are found where people are found.
